about

"The last thing that you remember is standing before the wizard Lakmir as he gestured wildly and chanted in an archaic tongue. Now you find yourself staring at an entryway which lies at the edge of a forest."

This is the original soundtrack created for the 25th Anniversary Remake of Shadowgate developed by Zojoi. The soundtrack album contains over 70 minutes minutes of music and is performed by a large orchestra and choir featuring prominent brass and string writing complimented by subtle appearances by woodwinds. Also featured is an original song, Journey's End (heard over the end credits), with vocals performed by the talented Jillian Aversa. The original version of Shadowgate was released on the Macintosh platform in 1987 and subsequently was released again on the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1989, which is the version most fans are familiar with.

Any fan of the original NES title is in for a treat here as Zojoi obtained the rights to utilize all of the original chiptune material within the games new score. The motifs and melodies heard in the NES iteration of Shadowgate such as "Castle Halls / Entryway", "Mirror Room", "Main Menu", "Courtyard", as well as the ominously sad Death piece are all contained within this release in full orchestral form. In many cases, these themes have been re orchestrated and tastefully woven throughout the entire score along with a wealth of new material.

Complimenting the score are many bonus tracks not heard in the game which were composed as "demo cues" by Rich Douglas very early on in development. Many of these demo pieces are direct re orchestrated interpretations of themes originally heard in the NES version of the game. Also presented on the album are a handful of alternate takes featuring different orchestrations and/or mixes of several pieces. Since the score is adaptive within the game itself, all of the instrument source tracks were carefully mixed for the purpose of this release to highlight various elements heard within each piece to make for a very cohesive cinematic listening experience.
