La trilogie The Banner Saga est sortie sur une intervalle de six ans : on pourra facilement comprendre à quel point elle est importante pour Austin Wintory. Si on peut écouter les deux premiers volets pour leurs ambiances, le troisième s'apprécie vraiment pour sa technique et sa maturité. Austin Wintory accentue la pression à grands renforts de cuivres et n'hésite pas à aller vers la cacophonie ("Steel flowing as water") et même la dissonance ("Blades sing from below"). La meilleure des trois !

J'ignore si Austin Wintory a souvent eu l'occasion de composer des bandes-originales de documentaires mais une chose est certaine : s'attaquer à ce genre cinématographique aussi particulier ne semble pas être pour lui un problème. Dans Tread, il fait preuve de discrétion et installe une couleur locale immersive avec le banjo et la trompette. Malgré tout, les émotions très nuancées sont aussi de la partie, révélant que Marvin Heemeyer n'est pas qu'un personnage vindicatif et fanatique. Réussi !
